- синтез аналогов природных селенитов из водных растворов;

- рентгеноспектральный микроанализ (сканирующий электронный микроскоп Hitachi S-3400N и система со сфокусированными электронными и ионными зондами Quanta 200 3D FEI);

- порошковая рентгенография (дифрактометр Rigaku Miniflex II);

- ICP MS анализ (химический анализ синтезированных соединений и насыщенных растворов; масс-спектрометр ELAN-DRC-e, PERKIN ELMER);

- ИК-спектроскопия (ИК-Фурье спектрометр BRUKER VERTEX 80);

- термогравиметрический и дифференциально-термический анализ (синхронный термический анализатор STA 449 F3 Jupiter, NETZSCH);

- изотермическая калориметрия растворения (определение стандартной энтальпии образования; микрокалориметр типа Кальве);

- метод адиабатической вакуумной калориметрии (определение низкотемпературной теплоемкости; калориметр AK-9.02/BCT-21, Termax);

- метод изотермического насыщения растворов (определение растворимости);

Introduction

Relevance of the research topic. In recent decades, a lot of attention has been given to the ecological problems of geochemistry and mineralogy and, consequently, to their hypergenic aspect that studies patterns of chemical elements migration and transformations of the mineral substance in the Earth's upper crust and its surface under the influence of the atmosphere, hydrosphere and living organisms at low temperatures and under the atmospheric pressure. A very important geochemical, mineralogical and ecological task in this context is the establishment of conditions and patterns for the transformation of chemical elements into active forms characteristic of near-surface environments. In this work, the problem is discussed using the study of the biologically active element selenium, compounds of which are poisonous but at the same time, in certain quantities, have a beneficial effect for human health.

Behaviour of selenium in natural processes is largely determined by the behaviour of sulphur, and the greatest similarities between them can be found at elevated temperatures and under reducing conditions of the endogenous mineral formation, while the greatest differences between them can be seen under low-temperature oxidizing conditions of exogenous processes. The endogenous (primary) minerals of selenium (selenides, selenium-bearing sulphides) are practically insoluble; however, selenites and selenates formed as result of their oxidation have greater migration mobility and, therefore, are able to participate in biological cycles and affect biota.

The predominant form of selenium in oxidizing environments is selenites (compounds with the SeO32- anion), while the selenite ion (SeO42-), in which selenium is present in its highest degree of oxidation, has been identified only in three rare minerals. Naturally occurring selenites can be divided into two distinct groups with regard to the conditions under which they are formed (Krivovichev, Depmeier, 2005). The first group includes anhydrous selenites with additional anions, which are products of volcanic sublimations (Tolbachin eruption, Kamchatka). Formation conditions of these minerals are specific and differ significantly from formation conditions of the selenites of the second group. The latter includes the selenites of copper, lead, cobalt, nickel and iron, predominantly containing water and formed in the oxidation zone of sulphide- and selenide-bearing ores. The minerals of the second group, which directly influence the behaviour of

selenium in the environment, constitute the object of this study. The pressure-temperature conditions of their formation are ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, which change only as a result of seasonal fluctuations. In this case, however, we can use thermodynamic characteristics of solid phases and components to simulate mineral formation processes under standard conditions - at a temperature of 25°C and at a pressure of 1 bar.

The purpose of the study is to establish physico-chemical parameters for the formation of naturally occurring selenites and selenates in exogenic conditions as well as experimentally determining the thermodynamic functions of formation, solubility and thermal stability of nickel and cobalt selenites (minerals of the ahlfeldite-cobaltomenite series).

The following tasks have been set in order to achieve the research objectives:

1. Systematization of thermodynamic data for Fe, Cu, Pb, Co, and Ni selenites and selenates, currently accumulated in the published scientific literature.

2. Synthesis of the analogues of naturally occurring nickel and cobalt selenites (cobaltomenite, ahlfeldite) and experimental observation of their thermodynamic characteristics.

3. Synthesis and experimental study of the properties of the ahlfeldite-cobaltomenite isomorphous series.

4. Plotting and analysis of Eh-pH diagrams for the Me-Se-H2O systems (Me=Co, Ni, Fe, Cu, Pb); determination, on their basis, of the physico-chemical parameters of formation and stability limits of selenium minerals in positive oxidation states.

The scientific novelty of the research results

New experimental data have been obtained on thermodynamic functions of ahlfeldite and cobaltomenite formation (formation enthalpy, entropy, heat capacity, and solubility product), their thermal stability, features of their dissolution, dehydration and decomposition.

This is the first systematic experimental study of the members of the Co(Ni)SeO3-2H2O isomorphous series and their properties.

This is also the first study to calculate physico-chemical parameters of the formation of selenium minerals in positive oxidation states in the Co-Se-H2O and Ni-Se-H2O systems.

The practical value of the research

The obtained data on the conditions under which secondary systems showing migration mobility are formed can be used to predict conditions for mobilization (and immobilization) of toxic chemical elements (selenium, heavy metals) in oxidation zones of mineral deposits, tailings and dumps of ore-mining companies. The new data on the thermodynamic functions of cobalt and nickel selenites formation will enable us to expand and further elaborate the framework for the thermodynamic modelling of mineral formation processes in environmental conditions. The obtained results can be used in sections of academic courses on mineralogy, geochemistry and thermodynamics of natural processes.

The objects of study and research methods

The objects of study are secondary minerals of selenium, which are formed as a result of the oxidation of selenides and selenium-bearing sulphides under exogenous conditions, with the participation of aqueous solutions, namely, Fe, Cu, Ni, Co and selenites and selenates. The choice of species-forming cations is due to the range of currently known selenites and selenates found in the oxidation zone of selenide-bearing ores. This work uses the following research methods:

- synthesis of analogues of natural selenites from aqueous solutions;

- X-ray microanalysis (the Hitachi S-3400N scanning electron microscope and the Quanta 200 3D FEI focused ion- and electron-beam microscope system);

- X-ray powder diffraction (the Rigaku Miniflex II diffractometer);

- ICP MS analysis (chemical analysis of synthesized compounds and saturated solutions; the ELAN-DRC-e mass spectrometer, PERKIN ELMER);

- IR spectroscopy (the BRUKER VERTEX 80 vacuum FT-IR spectrometer);

- thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (the STA 449 F3 Jupiter simultaneous thermal analyser, NETZSCH);

- isothermal solution calorimetry (to determine the standard enthalpy of formation, a Calvet-type microcalorimeter);

- the method of vacuum adiabatic heat capacity calorimetry (to determine the low-temperature heat capacity; the AK-9.02/VST-21 calorimeter, Termax);

- the method of isothermal saturation of solutions (to determine solubility);

- thermodynamic calculations using the Geochemist's Workbench software system (GMB 7.0 and 9.0).

The main bulk of the research was carried out at the Department of Geochemistry and used the equipment of the SPbU Resource Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis, the SPbU Resource Centre for X-ray Diffraction Studies, and the SPbU Centre for Geo-Environmental Research and Modelling (GEOMODEL). Calorimetric measurements were carried out at N.I. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University. A number of analytical quantifications were performed at the Central Analytical Laboratory of the Russian Geological Research Institute (VSEGEI).

Key results of the research submitted for oral defence

1. Experimental investigation of synthesized analogues of ahlfeldite (NiSeO3-2H2O) and cobaltomenite (CoSeO3-2H2O) allowed us to determine, at the modern technological level, the thermodynamic functions of their formation, to establish the fields of thermal stability, specific features of their dehydration and the type of their interaction with water.

2. Experimental study of the Ni(Co)SeO3-2H2O solid solutions confirmed the existence of the ahlfeldite-cobaltomenite isomorphous series; within this series, however, the study has revealed a change in the dependence of solubility, temperature, and the character of dehydration on the composition of mixed selenites with predominant nickel

3. Calculation of the Eh-pH diagrams in the Me-Se-H2O systems (Me = Co, Ni, Fe, Cu, Pb) made it possible to establish the physico-chemical parameters of cobaltomenite, ahlfeldite, mandarinoite, chalcomenite, and molybdomenite mineral formation. Natural occurrence of selenates seems unlikely, with the exception of copper and lead selenates.

1. SELENIUM: GENERAL INFORMATION AND FORMS OF

OCCURRENCE IN ENDOGENOUS AND EXOGENOUS CONDITIONS

Selenium was first discovered in 1817 by the outstanding Swedish chemist Jons Jacob Berzelius who analysed the red deposit in the lead chamber used for manufacturing sulphuric acid from the pyrites of the Falun mine. The name of the element is derived from Greek aeX^vn 'selene' meaning Moon. This name was chosen for the new element due to the similarities between its properties and those of tellurium, which was named after the Earth and which is chemically related to selenium.

1.1. Overview

Selenium appears as number 34 in Mendeleev's periodic table and is one of the elements in the main subgroup of Group 6. Some general facts about Se are given in Table 1.1 below.

The position of selenium in the sulphur-selenium-tellurium series determines the similarity between the physico-chemical properties of these elements. However, selenium, if compared with sulphur, is characterized by larger values of nuclear charge, atomic mass, ionic and covalent radii, while having lower values of ionization potentials and electronegativity. The greatest similarities between Se, Te, and S appear at elevated temperatures and reducing conditions, and the greatest differences can be seen under the low-temperature oxidizing conditions of exogenous processes.

The outermost atomic shell of selenium has 6 electrons. By picking up two electrons, they form negative selenide ions, Se2-. Selenium can exist as positive oxidations states (Se4+ h Se6+) only in oxygenated compounds (selenites and selenates, respectively), which in a biological setting are predominantly supergene in origin.

The first selenium minerals - berzelianite (CrnSe) and eucairite (AgCuSe) - were discovered in 1818 by Berzelius. For a long time, however, the mineralogy of selenium had not been extensively investigated. There were several reasons for that, the main being the fact that selenium minerals are rare and, moreover, occur in insignificant clusters, often only in the form of small precipitates (the size of one-hundredths or thousandths of a millimetre). Under such conditions, selection of monomineral samples for chemical analysis and other investigations presented certain difficulties (Egel, 1962); in some cases, mixtures of selenium minerals were described as separate minerals (for instance, tilkerodite = a mixture of clausthalite, cobaltine, and hematite; zorgite = a mixture of clausthalite, umangite and tiemannite; lehrbachite = a mixture of clausthalite and tiemannite, etc.) (Mineralogical Dictionary, 2008).

The total number of known naturally occurring selenium minerals in 2015 was 110, including native selenium, 1 selenium oxide, 73 selenides, 34 selenites, 1 selenite-selenate, and 2 selenates (Charykova, Krivovichev, 2015; Charykova, Krivovichev, 2017). All of them belong to rare or very rare minerals. Most selenium minerals are derivatives of hydrogen selenide H2Se with the lattice represented by the types Me2X, MeX, Me2X3, MeX2, etc. The salts of selenious acid (H2Se03), selenites, and the salts of selenic acid (H2Se04) selenates, play a less important role (Ecological Geochemistry of Elements: A Reference Book, 1996).

Copper selenides are the most typical of the group; selenides of d-metals - Ni, Ag, Pd, Fe, Co, Hg, Pt, Zn, Cd, Mo, and p-metals - Bi, Pb, Sb, Tl, Sn, are also widespread. The most common minerals of selenium are clausthalite, PbSe (selenium content 26.3-28%); native selenium, Se; ferroselite, FeS2 (68.4-73.2%); stilleite, ZnSe (54.7%); cadmoselite, CdSe (59.7%); berzelianite, CrnSe (35 - 41%); and umangite, Cu3Se2 (40 - 45.5%) (Ivanov, Vidyakin, Yushko-Zakharova, 1998).

1.2. Selenium in endogenous deposits

Endogenous deposits are the most important source of selenium. Independent selenium deposits are rare and, in most cases, belong to the hydrothermal type. Selenium is most often obtained as a by-product from ore processing aimed at extracting the primary mineral component: copper, nickel, etc. The disseminated form is the most typical for selenium, but native element minerals are also found (Egel, 1962).

The main features of selenium geochemistry in endogenous conditions (in contrast to exogenous ones) are largely determined by the similarity of crystal-chemical properties of sulphur and selenium. In endogenous processes, most of selenium enters the crystalline lattices of sulphides, replacing sulphur. Since sulphur content exceeds that of selenium manifold, this contributes to the dissemination of selenium across the total bulk of sulphides. Formation of independent selenium minerals can only occur under much rarer geochemical conditions characterized by sulphur undersaturation of magma chambers or a perturbation of the oxidation-reduction system in gold, uraninite, arsenide and iron ore deposits, as well as siderite, barite and quartz veins that are poor in S2- anions (Sindeeva, 1959; Vlasova, 1964; Egel, 1962).

In magmatic deposits, selenium accumulates only in segregation type deposits. (Egel, 1962). Such deposits are usually confined to differentiated massifs of ultrabasic rocks, which most often have the form of sheet intrusions. They are usually characterized by large-scale and massive copper-nickel mineralization, and possess significant reserves of copper, nickel, platinum-group metals and selenium. The ores are mainly represented by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite; besides, there are often subordinate amounts of pyrite, magnetite, titanomagnetite, cubanite, sphalerite, ilmenite, millerite; chromite, sperrylite, arsenopyrite, cobaltite, cavalerite, native copper, and others. All sulphide minerals of these deposits contain a certain amount of selenium due to its isomorphic inclusion into their lattice. As a rule, selenium minerals are not formed under these conditions. Typical deposits of this kind are Sudbury (Canada), Insizva (Africa) and Norilsk in the Krasnoyarsk Region (Egel, 1962).

Other magmatic deposits (apatite-magnetite, titanomagnetite, chromite, etc.) contain small amounts of selenium only if sulphide impurities are present - chalcopyrite, bornite, etc. Selenium content in the sulphides of these deposits usually varies within 0.00040.0040% (Sindeeva, 1959; Vlasova, 1964).

There are two types of volcanogenic deposits that are interesting from the point of view of selenium content: deposits of native sulphur and tuffs. The established Se content in volcanic sulphur is up to 1%. Deposits of native sulphur have been found in many areas of modern or recent volcanism and fumarolic activity - the Hawaiian Islands, the Aeolian Islands and the Kuril Islands, Kamchatka, New Zealand, etc. The analysis of volcanic sulphur samples from the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka has in most cases shown selenium presence of up to 0.19%. Deposits of this type are usually small-scale, and their industrial value is limited. Selenium deposits in volcanic tuffs and bentonites are much larger. An example of such deposits is Eocene andesitic tuffs found in Wyoming, USA. Selenium mineralization is confined to two sheetlike deposits of tuffs, which are partly bentonized. Se content in tuffs varies from 0.003 to 0.012%, and is rarely above 1% (Egel, 1962).

Selenium is an entirely non-characteristic element for the pegmatite process; however, it is present in small amounts in the later stages of the formation of pegmatite bodies, which are associated with bismuth and sulphides mineralization. For example, galena from the alkaline pegmatites of Xinjiang (China) contains 0.025-0.045% of Se, while galena from the alkaline pegmatites of the Khibiny Massif contains 0.095% of Se (Vlasov, 1964).

The main stages of endogenous activity which lead to the increased concentrations of selenium and, under favourable conditions, to the formation of its independent minerals, are hydrothermal processes. In hydrothermal deposits, practically all sulphide minerals contain selenium in the amount from 0.1 to n-10^%. Here we should, first of all, name the pyrite, copper-sulphide and polymetallic deposits, which contain ores with selenium as a characteristic accessory element (Egel, 1962).

Copper-sulphide deposits characteristically contain patches, lenses, irregular-shaped pods of various sizes, usually associated with volcanic and sedimentary strata. The ores of these deposits consist mainly of pyrite and chalcopyrite, but sphalerite, pyrrhotite, galena and grey copper ores are also present. Selenium, as a rule, is present in these ores in the thousandths, less often - hundredths, of a percent, but only in the form of isomorphous impurities in sulphides. Proper chalcopyrite and pyrite ore varieties are enriched with selenium (up to 0.1%), as compared to the complex ores with sphalerite. This type includes the Blyava and Degtyarskoye deposits in the Urals, and the Rio Tinto deposits in Spain (Paley, 1957; Vlasov, 1964).

The most interesting polymetallic deposits in terms of commercial content of selenium are medium-temperature lead-zinc deposits, occurring in volcanic and sedimentary strata. Selenium does not form its independent minerals here, but it is present in the sulphide lattice in amounts varying from 20 to 200 g/ton. An example is the Zolotushinskoye deposit in the Altai Region (Sindeeva, 1959; Vlasova, 1964).

As a persistent isomorphic impurity in sulphide minerals, selenium is found in high-temperature quartz-wolframite-bismuth deposits. The most selenium-enriched minerals are pyrite - 0.0175% and galena - 0.0116%; other sulphides (pyrrhotite, molybdenite, etc.) contain selenium in the thousandths of a percent, while wolframite does not contain selenium. Examples of such deposits include Belukha and Bukuka in Transbaikal, Kara-Oba in Kazakhstan, and some others (Egel, 1962).

In tin deposits, selenium is often present as an isomorphous impurity in the sulphides of last stages of mineralization. Selenium in its independent mineral form (guanajuatite (Bi2Se3), etc.), has been found only in cassiterite-quartz-sulphide deposits -the Ingodinskoye, Sohondo, and Zun-Undur deposits (Zabaikalsky Region). These deposits do not have any practical value in terms of selenium extraction (Egel, 1962).

From among the molybdenum deposits, the highest concentrations of commercial value selenium are found in relatively low-temperature copper-molybdenum deposits, usually represented by large stockworks and zones of disseminated ores. Here selenium occurs in the form of isomorphous impurities in molybdenite (0.0260-0.0513%), chalcopyrite (0.0030-0.0052%), and pyrite (0.0015-0.0080%). Minerals of later generations contain a higher content of selenium (Vlasov, 1964). There is data (Egel, 1962) on the formation of independent selenium minerals in the deposits of this type (for example, eucairite, CuAgSe; umangite Cu3Se2, etc.). Deposits of this kind include the Kajaran and Dastakert deposits in Armenia, the Almalyk deposit in Uzbekistan, the Paragachai deposit in Azerbaijan, and others.

Among cobalt deposits, selenium mineralization is well developed in the cobaltite-selenide-telluride type. This type of deposits is genetically related to the well-differentiated moderately acidic granitic intrusions, located mainly in metamorphic sedimentary rocks, of a younger age, which are confined to tectonic zones. Typical representatives of this type are the Verkhne-Seymchanskoye and Vetrovoye deposits (Magadan Oblast). In this type of ores, selenium is represented by its independent minerals - mostly clausthalite (PbSe),

guanajuatite (Bi2Se3), and laitakarite (Bi4Se3). They are characterized by paragenesis with gold tellurides, native bismuth, cobaltite and chlorite. Selenium content in the ores of these deposits varies within the range of the thousandths and ten thousandths of a percent. For these types of ore, extracting selenium can, in the case of their integrated use, be of commercial value (Egel, 1962).

Some hydrothermal uranium deposits also show presence of independent Se minerals. These are mostly bismuth selenides (Johanngeorgenstadt, Schneeberg, Germany); copper, mercury, lead and silver selenides are also represented (the region of Lake Athabasca and Beaverlodge Lake, Canada). Along with the formation of independent minerals, selenium can also enter as an impurity in the structure of sulphide minerals, with a content of several percent (Katanga, Congo). Deposits of this type apparently have commercial value in terms of selenium extraction (Vlasov, 1964).

Sulphide minerals in gold deposits are characterized by the presence of disseminated selenium in concentrations rarely exceeding the thousandths of percent. The gold-bearing quartz type of deposits also deserves attention, since they often contain bismuthinite (Bi2S3), one of the best selenium concentrators (for instance, bismuthinite of the Kirovsky Deposit in Orenburg Region shows selenium content of 0.28-0.33%). Gold-silver-quartz-adular deposits are also of interest for us. Selenium here forms independent minerals (selenides of silver, lead, bismuth) in the form of microscopically small precipitates. These are relatively low-temperature deposits, represented by veins and stockwork zones formed at shallow depths. A typical representative of this type is the Rejang-Lebong deposit in Sumatra. The average selenium content in the ores of this deposit is 0.016% (Sindeeva, 1959; Vlasov, 1964).

Among the hydrothermal deposits, there are several independent deposits of selenium, with ores entirely represented by selenides. They form assemblages of clausthalite, eucairite, umangite, and tiemannite in siderite-hematite veins (the Tilkerode, Lerbach, Zorge, and Andreasberg deposits in Germany). The largest deposit of this type is Pacajake in Bolivia, represented by a barite-siderite vein with blockite and other selenides.

Independent selenium deposits do not have significant commercial importance, but they are of considerable interest for studying the mineralogy of selenium and determining its geochemical history (Egel, 1962; Vlasov, 1964).

Selenium is a persistent accessory of sulphide deposits (which can be explained by the geochemical and crystallochemical similarity of Se and S). Sulphides are the "favourite" mineral concentrators of Se, containing recoverable reserves of selenium (Simon et al., 1997; Pirri, 2002). In all commercial ores, selenium is in 85-95% of cases hosted by pyrite and chalcopyrite, in up to 5-7% of cases - by sphalerite, and the rest is disseminated in secondary minerals. Industrial extraction Se is connected with its associated extraction. In the Russian Federation, sulphide deposits account for 96.5% of selenium reserves and 98.8% of selenium production (for example, the Gaiskoye Field of Norilsk Group deposits (Talnakhskoye and Oktyabrskoye)). In near-surface conditions, in environments rich in water and oxygen above the groundwater level (phreatic level mirror), most sulphides easily oxidize, forming oxidation zones. According to the classical scheme (Smirnov, 1955; Yakhontova, Grudev, 1978; Zhdanov, Gamyanin, 200; Bulakh et al., 2008, etc.), the distribution of oxidation products of sulphide ores demonstrates altitudinal zonality, with the following zones (from top to bottom): zones of intensive oxidation (the "iron hat"), zones of leaching, and zones of secondary enrichment. In the oxidation zone of selenium-bearing sulphide deposits, selenium is released from the structures of the decomposing sulphides during the oxidation process; part of it is carried off outside the boundaries of the deposit and part is sorbed by iron hydroxides, but it can also be present in the form of independent minerals - native selenium, selenides or selenites, depending on the reductive-oxidative conditions.

1.3. Selenium in the natural environment

The development of mineral deposits, mining and engineering work on their sites lead to the intensification of hypergenic mineralization processes, deepening the oxidation processes and carrying out ore oxidation products beyond the limits of the deposits, and in particular, leading to accumulation of toxic elements in the environment, in their most hazardous mobile forms. In the case of selenium, such forms are represented by Se compounds in an oxidation state of (+4) - selenite minerals and H2SeO3, HSeO3-, SeO32-particles, which accumulate in their dissolved forms in natural waters and soils), and Se compound in the highest oxidation state of (+6). The latter form is only found in 3 very rare minerals and also in the form of the selenate ion SeO42 in some types of natural waters.

1.3.1. Natural selenites and selenates

Difference in the geochemistry and mineralogy of sulphur and selenium are most obvious in the near-surface oxidizing conditions (Krivovichev, Charykova, 2006). Here sulphur is found either in its native state or in the form of sulphates (about 300 minerals) and very rarely in the form of sulphites (3 mineral species). For selenium, a native state is also possible under these conditions, but in a more oxidative environment, the predominant form of its occurrence is the selenites, while selenate anion (the highest oxidation form of selenium) has been identified only in three rare minerals (olsacherite, schmiederite and carlosruizite).

Yakhontova, Zvereva (2000) describe a comparative simplicity of chemical formulas and almost constant content of molecular water (a type of crystalline hydrate salts) as characteristic features of natural selenites and selenates. The list of selenium minerals in positive oxidation states based on the data from Krivovichev, Charykova (2006) is given in Chapter 2 (Table 2.1). Here I will specify only the number of selenites and selenates of various chemical elements that act as species-forming cations: Cu (12), U (7), Pb (6), Na (3), K (2), Ni (1), Co (1), Fe (1), Cd (1), Zn (1), Bi (1), Ba (1), Ca (1), and Mg (1). It is clear that, like it is with the selenides, copper minerals are most typical.

By conditions of their formation, naturally occurring selenites can be divided into two distinct groups (Krivovichev, Depmeier, 2005). The first group includes anhydrous selenites with additional anions (allochalcoselite, burnsite, georgbokiite, ilinskite, sophiite, chloromenite), which are products of volcanic sublimations (Tolbachik eruption, Kamchatka). Formation conditions of these minerals are specific and differ significantly from formation conditions other selenites and selenates.

The second group includes secondary selenites and selenates, which are formed with active participation of aqueous solutions in near-surface environment under conditions of seasonal variations in temperature and atmospheric pressure (Krivovichev, Depmeier, 2005). These minerals, which are formed, as a rule, in the oxidation zone of sulphide- and selenide-bearing ores, are the focus of our study. At the El Dragon deposit (Bolivia), for instance, primary ores have been found to contain berzelianite, clausthalite, eskebornite, klokmannite, krutaite, penroseite, native selenium, tiemannite, trogtalite, umangite, and 8 selenites in the oxidation zone (ahlfeldite, chalcomenite, klinochalcomenite, cobaltomenite, mandarinoite, molybdomenite, olsacherite, schmiederite) in association with anglesite,

coronadite goethite, gypsum, lepidocrocite, linarite, malachite and other minerals. Occurrence in association with selenides is also typical for the Pacajake (Bolivia), where oxide-bearing ores have been found to contain ahlfeldite, chalcomenite, cobaltomenite, molybdomenite, native selenium, olsacherite and mandarinoite, associated with penroseite, clausthalite, naumannite, tiemannite, pyrite and other minerals.

In some deposits, selenites are not products of changes in primary selenides, but are formed during the oxidation of selenium-bearing sulphide ores (Krivovichev, Depmeier, 2005). The most interesting in this respect is the Pb-As deposit of the Baccu Locci mine (Sardinia, Italy), where the oxidation zone was found to contain chalcomenite and native sulphur. Primary ores of this deposit do not contain selenides. The ores are dominated by galena and sphalerite. From among the ore minerals, notable amounts of selenium have been only found in galena.

A special group is constituted by uranyl selenites, which are secondary minerals and can serve as indicators of uranium mineralization (Krivovichev, Depmeier, 2005). Most of the uranyl selenites (guilleminite, derriksite, demesmaekerite, marthozite, and piretite) have been found in the Cu-Co-Mn-U oxidation zone of the Musoni deposit, Zaire. Two species of uranyl selenites (haynesite and larisaite) have been identified in uranium-bearing sandstones (the Repete Mine, Utah, USA).

1.3.2. Selenium in the biosphere and its ecological role

Interest in the conditions under which selenium can be converted into mobile forms is connected with its biological role. Se is one of the micronutrients essential for life: it is present in all tissues, except for the adipose tissue (Ecological Geochemistry of Elements: A Reference Book, 1996). According to the World Health Organization, the toxic intake of selenium starts at 400 ^g/day; the intake of less than 40 ^g/day is regarded as selenium deficiency, and the recommended intake of selenium is 55-75 ^g/day (WHO, 1996).

The vital biological role of selenium for human and animal life was established in 1957 (Schwartz, Foltz, 1957): it is contained in the antioxidant enzyme (glutathione peroxidase), and in the enzyme involved in thyroid hormone synthesis (Artur, Beckett, 1989). Selenium also plays an important role in the functions of the immune system. Numerous studies indicate a link between selenium deficiency and the increased risk of developing cardiovascular pathologies (WHO, 1987; 1996; Ivanov, 1996), and also with the

frequency of oncological diseases (Levander, 1986), and the decrement in visual acuity (Vadkovskaya, Lukashev, 1981; Novikov, 1984). Selenium deficiency contributes to premature aging, increases the incidence of tooth decay, constitutes a risk factor for the development of bronchial asthma and allergic diseases. Classic manifestations of selenium deficiency in humans are Keshan's disease (cardiomyopathy) and Kashin-Beck disease (tubular bone changes) (Tan, 1989; Yu, Jiang, 1986).

At the same time, elevated Se concentrations in animals cause a disease called alkalosis, or alkaline disease (Sindeeva, 1959). In humans, increased selenium content provokes disturbance in protein metabolism, lipid exchange, and water-salt metabolism, liver and function abnormalities, nail disorders and tooth damage (Oldfield, 1999).

The maximum acceptable concentration of selenium in drinking water is 0.01 mg/L (GOST 2874-82 "Drinking water. Sanitary requirements and quality control"). A directive of the World Health Organization (WHO) sets the recommended concentration of Se in drinking water at 0.01 mg/L, and this standard has been adopted by the European Union, Australia, Japan and Canada. The US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) (NAS, 1976) introduced its own requirements with regard to Se content in drinking water, which is set at 0.05 mg/L (Krainov, 1991; Plant et al., 2004, 2014).

Areas deficient in Se have been identified in Finland (with Se concentrations in soil of 0.005-1.25 mg/ kg), in India (0.025-0.71 mg/kg), and in Greece (0.05-0.10 mg/kg). High concentrations of selenium have been recorded, for example, in some Irish soils associated with black shales (up to 1200 mg/kg) (Plant et al., 2014).

Selenium content in soils is mainly determined by the rocks in association with which they are formed. The climatic features of the region are also important: in humid and semi-humid areas, selenium compounds, such as sulphur, usually leach out of the soil, so the toxic levels of accumulated selenium are found mainly in arid and semi-arid conditions. The US National Subcommittee on Selenium divided all soils into three classes according to their selenium content (Orlov, 2002):

1) Soils with toxic levels of selenium (carbonate, alkaline soils where selenium is present in the form of selenates);

2) Soils with non-toxic selenium levels (acid soils enriched with iron and containing selenium in amounts of 1-1.5 mg/kg);

3) Soils with low selenium content (soils developed on igneous rocks and young volcanic sediments).

In highly oxidized environments (pe + pH> 15.0), the SeO42- ion dominates in both acidic and alkaline soils. In the pe + pH = 7.5-15.0 range, the most important role belongs to the HSeO3- and SeO32- ions, with HSeO3- dominant in acidic soils, and SeO32- - in alkaline soils. In the highly reducing environments (pe + pH <7.5), the H2Se form dominates, but the contribution of H2Se to the total selenium concentration in the solution is significant only in very acidic environments. The anion Se2- is present in small amounts and is not significant for most soils (Orlov, 2002).

Plant uptake of selenium contained in soils mainly depends on the acidic-alkaline and oxidation-reduction parameters of soils, the mineral composition, and the organic matter content. Even soils with a relatively high selenium concentration can be Se deficient for plants if selenium is present in a low-mobility form (Plant et al., 2014). The highest mobility of selenium is found in oxic alkaline soil conditions, since in this environment selenates are the predominant form of selenium. In addition, plants themselves differ in their capacity to accumulate selenium. In Rosenfield, Beath (1964) we find the following classification of plants, describing their selenium accumulating capacity:

1. Plants that accumulate selenium (its concentrations in such plants can be as high as >1000 mg/kg) and grow well on selenium-rich soils;

2. Plants that intake selenium in concentrations of 50-100 mg/kg;

3. Plants that can accumulate selenium only up to 50 mg/kg.

The ability of plants to constantly accumulate Se in significant quantities serves as the basis for one reliable method of prospecting for selenium deposits - geobotanical (Egel, 1962).

Selenium is intensively accumulated by lower plants (mosses, lichens, fungi). They usually accumulate selenium to the level of n-10-4 % Se, while inedible poisonous mushrooms, especially the deadly amanita, contain hundreds of times more of selenium content. Other plants, as a whole, negatively react to high concentrations of selenium in soils: they show slower growth, yellowing, black spots and chlorosis (Frankenberger, Benson, 1994; Jacobs, 1989).

When dying, plants give various selenium forms to the soil, both in the form of simple ions and in the form of organic compounds - Se-analogues of S-amino acids

(Kovalsky, Ermakov, 1967). The role of microorganisms in these processes is significant: many microorganisms are able to extract selenium from the soil and accumulate it in their cells.

Selenium compounds can get into the atmosphere as a result of volcanic activity. Significant amounts of selenium are emitted into the atmosphere through fuel combustion, especially coal combustion. Volatile compounds are also produced by soil microorganisms (Omerland, 1994, Amouroux et al., 2001), especially fungi in the oxygen environment, and alfalfa and selenium-accumulating plants, such as the species Astragalus, Haplopappus, and Stanleya. Volatile Se compounds also include dimethyl selenide and dimethyl diselenide (Orlov, 2002; Plant et al., 2004). Se concentration in atmospheric precipitation is estimated to be in the range of 0.04-1.4 ^g/L (Hashimoto, Winchester, 1967).

Selenium as an element is characterized by adsorbent deposition on iron hydroxides (Bar-Yosef and Meek, 1987), clay minerals, carbonates and organic substances. These processes remove most of Se from natural water (Goleva, Lushnikov, 1967; Boiko, Nazarenko, Kislova, 1976; Boiko, Nazarenko, Kislova, 1981). In a number of cases, however, selenium content exceeds the average values, which may negatively affect the ecological situation in the region. Scientific literature often uses agricultural soils in the central and western parts of the United States as an example of such "excessive" content (Wu et al., 2000; Deveral et al., 1988; Deveral et al., 1994; Plant et al., 2014; Charykova M.B. et al., 2007). In the San Joaquin Valley in California, for instance, artificial irrigation and the impact of hot climate led to the leaching out of selenium from the soil and its accumulation in the irrigation water in its mobile selenate form, which adversely affected the health of the local human and animal population. Development of domains with increased Se content in natural waters have been identified in other arid regions of the globe: the Soon Sakesar Valley of the Punjab province, Pakistan (Afzal et al., 1999; Afzal et al., 2000); the Enshi Area in the Hubei Province, (Yang et al., 1983; Fordyce et al., 2000); the Cienega De Santa Clara wetland system, Mexico (Garcira-Hernarndez et al., 2000).

The following geochemical types of waters which can accumulate Se have been described in scientific literature (Krainov, 1983):

The first type - selenium-containing groundwater with high Eh values (more than +200 mV) - is formed in the weathering crust and in the catchment areas has a different,

more often sulphate composition; it contains selenates, selenites, hydroselenites and organic compounds of selenium.

The second type of Se-containing water, with low Eh values (less than -100 mV), is represented by sulphide waters and is characteristic for submerged areas of hydrogeological structures; Se is present as HSe-.

At present, the increased Se concentrations in natural waters and soils are caused not only by natural factors, but also by human activity and the effect of technology. The main selenium pollutants in the environment are selenium-producing and sometimes sulphur, copper, nickel, and phosphate manufacturing plants, thermal power plants, processing of nonferrous and precious metals and their extraction, organic synthesis facilities, pigment production for glass painting, production of photographic materials, semiconductors, electronics, ceramics, varnish paints, printing inks, lubricating oils, and catalysts for fire-resistant materials. Se sources in groundwater include effluents from extractive facilities, ore-treatment plants, metallurgical works, thermal power plants, sulphuric acid and fertilizer manufacturing plants (Krainov, Zakutin, 1991). At the same time, selenium is released into the atmosphere mainly from the production environments with vented emissions in the form of dust and aerosols, while the water bodies get selenium together with effluents from industrial enterprises (Filov, 1989). Anthropogenic sources of Se in agriculture usually include phosphate fertilizers, selenium-containing pesticides and fungicides (Alloway, 1995; Frankenberger and Benson, 1994; Jacobs, 1989). Another anthropogenic source of selenium that is worth mentioning is spent nuclear fuel, which, when decaying, releases a long-lived isotope 79Se (Chen et al., 1999). During the oxidation of spent nuclear fuel, selenium can be released into the environment in the form of selenite- or selenite-ions (Baur et al., 2003).

2. PHYSICO-CHEMICAL MODELLING OF SELENIUM BEHAVIOUOR IN NEAR-SURFACE ENVIRONMENTS (OVERVIEW OF PUBLISHED WORKS)

In recent decades, mineralogy and geochemistry have been increasingly interested in processes that occur in near-surface environments at low temperatures and pressures, with participation of hydrospheric water and atmospheric gases. Changes in ores and rocks, in extractive and industrial production wastes consist in the oxidation of previously formed mineral phases, in their hydration and decomposition with subsequent formation of new compounds, which are more stable under the weathering conditions. Methods of thermodynamic modelling, alongside other techniques, are used to find solutions to these problems (Charykova, Krivovichev, 2012).

Modelling is a method of studying an object or process which examines not the object or process itself, but some auxiliary system created by us and called a model (Borisov, Shvarov, 1992). We can find numerous examples of the application of thermodynamics methods for solving geological problems in monographs and textbooks (Kern, Weisbrod, 1966; Garrels, Christ, 1968; Korzhinsky, 1973; Bulakh, 1978; Wood, Fraser, 1981; Bulakh, Krivovichev, 1985; Methods of Geochemical Modelling and Prediction in Hydrogeology (Ed. S.R. Krainov), 1988; Chatterjee, 1991; Thermodynamic Modelling of Geological Materials, 1992; Borisov, Shvarov, 1992; Bulakh et al., 1995; Dolivo-Dobrolsky, 2000; Charykova, Charykov, 2003; Krainov et al., 2004; Zharikov, 2005; Geological Evolution and Self-organization of the Water-Rock System (Ed. S.L. Shvartsev), 2005; Bethke, 2008; Chudnenko, 2010; Charykova, Krivovichev, 2012, etc.). By the beginning of the 21st century, methods of thermodynamic modelling had become a familiar and effective tool for research in geochemistry and mineralogy, especially due to the appearance of a large number of available computer programmes; a list of the most popular of these programmes is given, for example, in Bethke (2008) and Oelkers et al. (2009).

While in the past the most important works on the application of physico-chemical modelling in geology focused on a detailed study of formation conditions of rock-forming and ore minerals, with calculations at elevated temperatures and pressures on the foreground, in recent years, as stated above, investigation of systems containing minerals that are formed in environmental conditions has come into importance. Besides, the importance of such studies for examining the conditions of mobility (or, conversely,

immobilization) of toxic elements should be highlighted, since the mechanisms of their influence on the biosphere (including human life) are determined by the speciation of these elements, and hence, the redox and acid-base conditions, the dependence of mineral solubility on the mineral composition and properties of the mineral-forming environment, complexation processes, etc.

Thermodynamic modelling of such systems and processes has its own special aspects. On one hand, since temperature variations in the near-surface conditions are insignificant and determined only by seasonal variations while the pressure can be set to 1 atm, the possibilities for constructing quantitative models expand, since physico-chemical research has after many years accumulated standard thermodynamic functions of mineral formation for a large number of minerals and particles in aqueous solutions. On the other hand, here we find wide variations in the chemical composition of the mineral-forming environment, which requires a more complex set of tools for describing the thermodynamic properties of solutions (Charykova, Krivovichev, 2012).

Thermodynamic analysis of mineral-forming conditions in systems involving aqueous solutions traditionally uses Eh-pH diagrams, which help to define the stability fields for certain solid phases, to estimate the border-line oxidation-reduction and acid-base conditions of the mineral-forming environment and the activity of the components. This approach is used in this work, when examining the formation of natural selenites of cobalt, nickel, copper, iron and lead. The calculations were carried out using the Geochemist's Workbench software system (versions GMB 7.0 and 9.0).

2.1. Methods of mineral equilibrium calculations and the construction of Eh-pH diagrams

Solution-mineral equilibrium calculations require sufficiently reliable figures for solubility products (SP), crystallizing in the system of solid phases. They can be obtained from the experimental data (for example, data on solubility, if the activity coefficients for the saturated solution components are known), or by conducting theoretical calculations, using the data on the Gibbs free energy of formation for substances. The thermodynamic solubility product for the solid phase MmXx-nHO is defined by the equation:

SPMmXx -nH2O = aMaXaH 2O,

where aM, ax and aH O = activity of cations M, anions X and water in the saturated solution;

m, x, n = coefficients in the formula MmXx-nHO.

In Kumok et al. (1983) we find the following classification of the methods of solubility product estimation.

1) From experimental data (by solubility, by solvent activity, and emf measurements).

A detailed discussion of all these methods is beyond the scope of this paper. Application of one of them - experimental determination of the solubility of nickel and cobalt selenites (and the calculation of thermodynamic properties based on the obtained data) will be discussed in the next chapter.

2) From thermodynamic properties of substances (the method of AG).

If we consider the formation reaction of this solid phase from a saturated solution: mMx+ + xXm- + nH2O ^ MmXx• nH2O, then the equilibrium constant K for this reaction is

K = aMmXx nH2O _ 1 _ 1

1 amaxan amaxan np

"M^X'-^O 111 MmXx nH2O

since the solid phase activity of the constant composition is 1.

Like any equilibrium constant, solubility product is related to the change in Gibbs free energy in the reaction ArG° as follows:

A G0 = -RT ln K, = RT ln SP,

r 1 1 *

where R = the universal gas constant, T = temperature (K).

In the thermodynamic database of the Geochemist's Workbench software system, which was used for calculations in this work, all chemical reactions are recorded not as reactions of solid phase formation from a saturated solution, but as its dissolution reactions, i.e.

MmXx-nHO ^ mMx+ + xXm- + nH2O.

It is obvious that in this case nothing is fundamentally changed and

A rG20 = - RT ln SP

Thus, knowing ArG°, we can calculate the solubility product (or rather the value of lgSP, which is normally used in practice):

ArG,0 ArG20

lgSP =-^^ =--^^

& 2.303RT 2.303RT

The value of AG° is obtained from the data on the standard Gibbs free energy of formation (AfG ) MmXx• nH2O, Mx+p-p, Xm-p-p h H2O:

ArG° =AfG (MmXx • nH2O) - (mAfG (Mx+) + xAfG (Xm~) + nAfG (H2O))

The authors of Kumok et al. (1983) estimate the accuracy of lgSP calculation using this method as low (0.5-1.0 units), but stress as its advantages, the possibility of using estimated values (for example, entropy, if there is data on the enthalpy of formation) and calculations at different temperatures.

The predominant migration forms of chemical elements associated with oxidation-reduction and acid-base processes can be qualitatively established from Eh-pH diagrams, which in the chemical literature are known as Pourbaix diagrams. They were originally suggested by electrochemists and metal corrosion scientists (Pourbaix, 1966). They graphically represent the dependence of Eh from pH for all oxidation-reduction reactions involving the chemical element under investigation that can take place in the aqueous environment; there are also vertical lines representing the boundaries corresponding to the pH values at which various hydrated forms appear. The lines divide the diagram into separate areas, which are called stability fields of solid phases. Since the position of these boundaries depends on the ion activity of the element in the solution, it is not just one continuous boundary line plotted on the diagram but a family of lines, each corresponding to a certain total activity of the chemical element in the solution. Apart from the continuous stability boundaries of solid phases, the diagram also has dotted lines plotted on it, which reflect the chemical equilibrium between the particles in the solution and divide the diagram into fields of predominance in the solution of one form or another (acid-base equilibria and complexation processes are taken into account). The points lying inside this or that region of predominance correspond to equilibrium conditions for two or more particles, but the activity of one of them is greater than the activity of all the others. The Eh-pH diagrams also show the upper and lower limits of water stability - the lines corresponding to the

electrochemical equilibrium of water with oxygen and hydrogen at a pressure equal to 1 bar for both gases. The area enclosed between these two lines is the region of water stability.

The position of the lines in the Eh-pH diagram should depend on the standard electrode potential and on the activity of the oxidized and reduced forms of the element in the solution that are involved in the establishment of this redox equilibrium (aOx and aRed), in accordance with the Nernst equation:

0 059 av°xam+

Eh = E0 +—-lg Ox H for the half-reaction VOxOx + ne VRedRed,

n aVRed

n "Red

where Ox and Red = oxidized and reduced forms respectively, vox and VRed = their stoichiometric coefficients, and n = number of electrons involved in the half-reacrtion (Charykova, Krivovichev, 2012).

It follows from the Nernst equation that the oxidation-reduction potential of the reaction (Eh) is equal to the standard electrode potential (E0) when the activity of substances involved in the reaction is equal to 1. Thus, in the Nernst equation, the first term takes into account the effect of the nature of substances on the Eh value, and the second term takes into account their activity in the solution. The standard electrode potential is related to the standard free Gibbs energy change in a half-reaction by the relationship

0 KG0

E0 =--r—,

nF

where F is the Faraday constant: F=96,485 C mol-1.

For a half-reaction involving protons (for instance, voxOx + mH+ + ne VRedRed), we have an equation which determines the linear dependence of Eh from pH:

r7 r0 0,059 aOxx 0,059m

Eh = E +—-lg —05-----pH.

Eh-pH diagrams have been widely used in the study of geochemical systems. It should be noted that in the geological literature the boundaries of stability fields of solid phases and fields of forms predominance in solutions are usually plotted as identical continuous lines, while groups of stability boundaries corresponding to different values of activity on one diagram are rarely charted. Usually separate diagrams are constructed for certain (geochemically realistic) values of the total activity (concentration) of the element in solution; on the other hand, diagrams for several chemical elements are often superimposed.

Numerous examples of Eh-pH diagram construction for characterising geochemical systems and estimating stability limits of various minerals in them can be found, for example, in the monograph by Garrels, Christ (1968).

2.2. Thermodynamics of mineral equilibria for selenium compounds

2.2.1. The Se-H2O system

The Eh-pH diagram for the Se-H2O system (and for many other elements) was first plotted by M. Pourbaix with his co-authors (Delahay et al, 1952). This diagram is given in fig. 2.1. It shows limits of stability for native selenium that correspond to various values of the activity of selenium in solution - from 10-6 to 1.

The Eh-pH for the Se-H2O system has been several times used for a geochemical interpretation of the behaviour of selenium in the natural setting (for instance, Sindeeva, 1959; Tischendorf, Ungethum, 1964). Subsequently, the thermodynamic data used to construct the diagram helped to obtain more detailed information, which led to a noticeable change in certain boundaries of the stability fields (Dyachkova, Khodakovsky, 1968; Buryanova, 1969; Brookins, 1988; Seby et al, 2001, etc.). A detailed review of these diagrams can be found in Krivovichev, Charykova (2006).
