ВВЕДЕНИЕ
Актуальность и степень изученности темы исследования
Современные крокодилы (Crocodylia Gmelin, 1788), согласно различным взглядам на их систематику, включают от 23 до 28 видов полуводных хищников-засадчиков из Африки, Азии, Австралии и обеих Америк (McAliley et al., 2006; Hekkala et al., 2011; Oaks, 2011; Shirley et al., 2014; Grigg, Kirshner, 2015; Murray et al., 2019). Они являются единственной выжившей ветвью клады Crocodylomorpha Walker, 1970, представители которой в прошлом были экологически и таксономически разнообразны и включали полностью морские (Gavialoidea Hay, 1930; Dyrosauridae de Stefano, 1903; Thalattosuchia Fraas, 1901), полуводные (большинство Neosuchia Benton et Clark, 1988) и наземные формы (Notosuchia Gasparini, 1971; Planocraniidae Li, 1976; Protosuchidae Brown, 1934; Shartegosuchidae Efimov, 1988) (Clark, 1986, 1994; Walker, 1990; Nesbitt, 2011). Крокодиломорфы появились в конце триаса и были едиственными представителями псевдозухиевой ветви архозавров (Archosauria Cope, 1869), пережившими вымирание в конце триаса (Nesbitt, 2011). Крокодилы, наряду с их ближайшим нынеживущим сестринским таксоном - птицами (Aves Linnaeus, 1758), являются двумя современными ветвями архозавров.
Сильно модифицированный акинетичный череп является «визитной карточкой» современных крокодилов и их вымерших родственников (Iordansky, 1973; Langston, 1973; Pol et al., 2013). Консолидация мозговой коробки (нейрокраниума), неба и затылочной части черепа -ключевые преобразования, произошедшие в течение эволюции крокодиломорф и связанные с увеличением силы смыкания челюстей (Langston, 1973; Erickson et al., 2012; Pol et al., 2013). Эти преобразования черепа происходили одновременно с ранней диверсификацией крокодиломорф в позднем триасе-ранней юре и были связаны с экологическим и эволюционным успехом представителей клады (Walker, 1990; Pol et al., 2013; Leardi et al., 2017, 2020). Таким образом, анатомия мозговой коробки имеет ключевое значение для понимания эволюции и биологии крокодилов и их вымерших родственников.
За последние три столетия были изучены различные аспекты строения мозговой коробки современных крокодилов и ископаемых крокодиломорф (Cuvier, 1824; Owen, 1850; Brühl, 1862; Miall, 1878; Kälin, 1955; Müller, 1967; Iordansky, 1973; Langston, 1973; Walker, 1990; Brochu, 1999; Holliday, Witmer, 2009; Dufeau, Witmer, 2015). Несмотря на большое количество предшествующих исследований, комплексного и всестороннего описания анатомии мозгового отдела черепа крокодилов до сих пор не было сделано. Кроме того, номенклатура элементов мозговой коробки крокодиломорф является сложной, запутанной и противоречивой во многих опубликованных работах (например, Owen, 1850; Iordansky, 1973; Busbey, Gow, 1984; Clark, 1986;
Walker, 1990; Wu, Chatterjee, 1993; Dufeau, Witmer, 2015; Leardi et al., 2017, 2020). Терминологическая нестабильность усложняет исследование и сравнение сложных структур нейрокраниума крокодиломорф. Это отражается в коротких и поверхностных описаниях мозговой коробки большинства вымерших таксонов, неточных и ошибочных определениях отдельных анатомических структур, а также в недостаточном включении признаков нейрокраниума в существующие филогенетические анализы группы. Анатомия нейрокраниума была детально описана для отдельных групп (например, Edinger, 1938; Colbert, 1946; Iordansky, 1973; Busbey, Gow, 1984; Clark, 1986; Walker, 1990; Kley et al., 2010; Barrios et al., 2018; Herrera et al., 2018; Leardi et al., 2017, 2020; Serrano-Martínez et al., 2019ab, 2021; Erb, Turner, 2021; Melstrom et al., 2021; Puértolas-Pascual et al., 2022), однако комплексной оценки эволюции мозговой коробки крокодиломорф не было сделано.
Цели и задачи
Целью данного исследования является подробное описание строения мозговой коробки и сопутствующих мягких органов (черепно-мозговых нервов и сосудов, пневматических полостей) современных крокодилов, а также выявление ключевых преобразований в эволюции и развитии нейрокраниума крокодиломорф.
Для достижения данной цели были поставлены следующие задачи:
1. Исследовать анатомию и развитие мозговой коробки современных крокодилов:
• сделать подробные трехмерные модели отдельных костей мозговой коробки основных представителей Crocodylia на основании данных компьютерной томографии (КТ);
• сделать подробное морфологическое описание элементов мозговой коробки Crocodylia на основании изученного скелетного материала и компьютерных трехмерных моделей;
• изучить процессы индивидуального развития элементов мозговой коробки современных Crocodylia на основании доступных источников (литературы, данных КТ).
2. Исследовать эволюцию мозговой коробки Crocodylomorpha:
• изучить строение мозговой коробки ископаемых Crocodylomorpha на основании доступных источников (литературы, данных КТ, исследования ископаемых образцов);
• составить таксон-признаковую матрицу, основанную на признаках мозговой корбки, и провести филогенетический анализ;
• оценить эволюционные преобразования мозговой коробки Сгосоёу1ошогрЬа.
3. Сопоставить выявленные эволюционные тренды с информацией об индивидуальном развитии нейрокраниума СгосоёуНа и выявить ключевые преобразования в строении и развитии мозговой коробки Сгосоёу1ошогрЬа.
Научная новизна
Данное исследование является первой попыткой всесторонне оценить строение и эволюцию мозговой коробки Сгосоёу1ошогрЬа. В ходе работы были получены следующие наиболее значимые результаты, которые определяют ее научную новизну:
• Впервые были получены трехмерные модели отдельных костей мозговой коробки для всех основных представителей СгосоёуНа (всего 9 видов). Это позволило детально описать строение нейрокраниума современных представителей группы и создать фундамент для исследования ископаемых таксонов.
• Была проведена ревизия всех доступных литературных источников с описанием мозговой коробки современных и ископаемых Сгосоёу1ошогрЬа. Подборка включает публикации с 1824 года (Cuvier, 1824) до новейших исследований 2020-2022 годов. Была проведена ревизия номенклатуры элементов мозговой коробки СгосоёуНа. На основании работы с литературой и собственных исследований предлагается детальный перечень названий для элементов нейрокраниума крокодиломорф. Эта работа должна способствовать унификации будущих исследований.
• Была изучена анатомия мозговой коробки представителей из всех основных групп Сгосоёу1ошогрЬа. На основании предшествующих работ и собственных исследований была составлена подробная таксон-признаковая матрица, основанная исключительно на признаках строения нейрокраниума и связанных элементов черепа. 32% признаков (53 из 167) были впервые использованы для проведения филогенетического анализа группы. 20% признаков (33 из 167) были включены в анализ после значительной модификации. 48% признаков (81 из 167) были включены в анализ в неизменном виде из предшествующих исследований или с незначительными модификациями. Таким образом, полученная матрица наполовину состоит из новой анатомической информации, полученной в ходе исследований автора.
• Полученные в ходе филогенетического анализа строгие консенсусные деревья Сгосоёу1ошогрЬа имеют достаточно высокую степень разрешенности основных клад. Это позволило оценить эволюцию мозговой коробки крокодиломорф, а также протестировать конкурирующие гипотезы о родственных связях определенных
таксонов. Проведенный анализ поддерживает монофилию основных клад (Crocodylomorpha, Crocodyliformes Hay, 1930, Thalattosuchia, Notosuchia, Neosuchia, Crocodylia), базальное положение Thalattosuchia, дистантные родственные связи Sebecidae Simpson, 1937 и Baurusuchidae Price, 1945, а также монофилию клады Longirostres Harshman et al., 2003.
• Впервые были сравнены эволюционные преобразования мозговой коробки Crocodylomorpha и индивидуальное развитие нейрокраниума Crocodylia. Предполагается, что в основе быстрых эволюционных модификаций черепа Crocodylomorpha лежали глубокие перестройки в индивидуальном развитии мозговой коробки, отраженные в эмбриогенезе современных крокодилов.
Теоретическая и практическая значимость
Подробное исследование нейрокраниальной анатомии современных крокодилов и ревизия терминологии данного отдела скелета закладывают фундамент для дальнейшего исследования мозговой коробки ископаемых крокодиломорф, а также других групп архозавров. В ходе работы была накоплена информация о строении и эволюции нейрокраниума во всех крупных кладах, относящихся к Crocodylomorpha. Были выявлены новые и пересмотрены ранее известные признаки мозговой коробки; их включение в дальнейшие филогенетические анализы группы позволит разрешить ряд фундаментальных вопросов о родственных связях внутри крокодиломорф. Так, уже на данном этапе работы удалось разрешить родственные связи некоторых таксонов (Gavialoidea, Longirostres, Sebecidae, Thalattosuchia) и протестировать конфликтующие гипотезы об их положении в системе Crocodylomorpha. Впервые были показаны взаимосвязи эволюционных преобразований черепа крокодиломорф с индивидуальным развитием современных крокодилов, что указывает на важность эмбриологических данных для понимания эволюционных процессов палеонтологами.
Полученные в ходе работы 3D модели черепов и отдельных костей мозговой коробки крокодилов являются интерактивными объектами, которые могут распространяться через Интернет и использоваться для исследовательских и образовательных целей. Данные модели были загружены мной на специализированный сайт Morphosource и доступны всем желающим по ссылке: https://www.morphosource.org/prgiects/0000Cn93?locale=en.
Результаты проекта были использованы мной в образовательных и научно-популярных проектах: при создании онлайн курса «Эволюционная история позвоночных: от рыб к динозаврам и человеку» на платформе «Открытое образование» (https://openedu.ru/course/ spbu/EVOLUT/#).
Материалы и методы
Основными методами в данной работе являются сравнительно-морфологический анализ, компьютерная томография (КТ) и трехмерное (3Б) моделирование, филогенетический анализ и анализ литературных источников. Детальное описание изученной выборки и аналитических подходов приведено в Главе 2.
Сравнительно-морфологический анализ является классическим подходом в анатомии и палеонтологии. Он позволяет находить сходства и различия в исследуемых таксонах, а также выявлять филогенетически значимые признаки. Сравнительно-морфологический подход также позволяет изучать анатомию мягких тканей у вымерших позвоночных путем исследования этих мягких органов у современных видов и соответствующих им остеологических коррелят у существующих и вымерших таксонов.
КТ позволяет изучать внутреннее строение образцов в деталях, не повреждая их, а благодаря 3D моделированию исследователи могут создавать объемные цифровые модели объектов. Эти методы позволяют виртуально воспроизводить, препарировать, расчленять и вращать объект без какого-либо вреда для исходного образца, что способствует детальному анатомическому исследованию. Процесс создания 3D моделей на основе данных КТ называется сегментацией.
Собранные анатомические данные были использованы для составления таксон-признаковой матрицы и проведения филогенетического анализа. Этот подход позволяет проводить подробный и проверяемый анализ многочисленных анатомических особенностей. По результатам филогенетического анализа выдвигаются верифицируемые гипотезы о филогенетических связях и эволюции таксонов.
Положения, выносимые на защиту
1. Мозговая коробка современных СгосоёуНа имеет характерное анатомическое стороение, которое сильно отличается от такового у большинства прочих диапсид. Она характеризуется обширным окостенением квадратных костей, которые имеют переднемедиальный наклон и прочно зафиксированы в черепе множеством шовных контактов, неподвижным базиптеригоидным сочленением нейрокраниума с небом, и консолидированным затылочным отделом. Такая жесткая структура является прочным каркасом для мощных мыщц-аддукторов нижней челюсти, что способствует увеличению силы укуса крокодилов. Эти основные модификации мозговой коробки у Crocodylia привели к перестройке
нейроваскулярных структур и образованию соответствующих им костных каналов, отсутствующих у большинства других диапсид.
2. Особенности мозговой коробки являются филогенетически информативными и ключевыми для оценки все еще спорных родственных отношений внутри Crocodylomorpha. Филогенетический анализ, основанный на нейрокраниальных данных, поддерживает монофилию Crocodylomorpha и основных клад крокодиломорф: Crocodyliformes, Metasuchia, Mesoeucrocodylia, Notosuchia, Neosuchia, Crocodylia и Longirostres. Результаты убедительно подтверждают базальное положение Thalattosuchia среди Crocodyliformes. Анализ не поддерживает монофилию Sebecosuchia и ставит под сомнение отнесение Dyrosauridae к Neosuchia.
3. Основные модификации нейрокраниума и прилегающих к нему отделов черепа произошли относительно рано в эволюционной истории Crocodylomorpha в позднем триасе -ранней юре. Они проходили поэтапно у базальных (non-crocodyliform) крокодиломорф, талаттозухий и базальных крокодилиформ, а наиболее быстрые изменения произошли в основании Crocodylomorpha и Crocodyliformes. Эти изменения включают: (1) переднемедиальный наклон квадратной кости, (2) многочисленные перекрывающиеся шовные контакты нейро- и дерматокраниума с квадратной костью и вторичным костным небом, (3) консолидацию затылка, (4) фиксацию базиптеригоидного сустава, (5) вертикализацию элементов основания черепа, (6) перестройку нейроваскулярных (задние черепные нервы и кровеносные сосуды) и слуховых структур (перилимфатическая система, слуховая капсула, околоушные окостенения), (7) редукцию надкрыловидной кости и сокрытие переднеушной кости в глазнично-височной области черепа, (8) обширное развитие паратимпанальных пневматических полостей.
4. Я предполагаю, что глубокие перестройки в индивидуальном развитии мозговой коробки лежали в основе быстрых эволюционных модификаций черепа Crocodylomorpha. Эти перестройки, по-видимому, отражены в эмбриогенезе современных Crocodylia и включают встраивание дермальных новообразований в различные части развивающегося хондрокраниума и обширное окостенение небноквадратного хряща в виде единственной квадратной кости, сопровождающееся ее переднемедиальным наклоном и удлинением.

Личный вклад автора
Автор сделал обзор литературы (Глава 1), провел большую часть экспериментальной работы и проанализировал результаты. Концептуализация работы выполнена автором совместно с научным руководителем П.П. Скучасом. Компьютерная томография современных и ископаемых образцов выполнена сотрудниками ресурсного центра "Рентгенодифракционные методы исследования" Санкт-Петербургского государственного университета и сотрудниками отдельных медицинских центров в Санкт-Петербурге и Москве, но при личном участии автора. Около 90 % сегментации данных КТ и 3Б-моделирования и 70 % иллюстраций выполнены автором, совместно с Е.А. Бойцовой (бывшая студентка СПбГУ) и Е.В. Мазур (студентка магистратуры СПбГУ). Автор самостоятельно выполнил анатомические описания (Глава 3), филогенетический анализ (Глава 4) и написал обсуждение (Глава 5).

Archosauria Cope, 1869 — крупный таксон, известный с триаса (Nesbitt, 2011) (Рис. 1.1). Родственные отношения внутри архозавров остаются предметом споров. В данной работе принята точка зрения, что Archosauria является кроновой группой, включающей последнего общего предка современных крокодилов и птиц и всех его потомков (Gauthier, 1986; Benton, Clark, 1988; Brusatte et al., 2010; Nesbitt, 2011; Ezcurra, 2016). В основании клада разделяется две основные линии — Avemetatarsalia Benton, 1999 и Pseudosuchia Zittel, 1887-1890 (Sues, 2019) (Рис. 1.1). Avemetatarsalia относится к так называемой «птичьей ветви» и включает в себя различных современных птиц и вымерших динозавров, летающих птерозавров и несколько других менее известных групп (Brusatte et al., 2010; Nesbitt, 2011; Sues, 2019). Pseudosuchia представляет собой так называемую «крокодиловую

ветвь» и включает все таксоны, более родственные Crocodylus niloticus, чем Passer domesticus (Brusatte et al., 2010; Nesbitt, 2011; Sues, 2019).
Pseudosuchia включает в себя несколько важных полностью вымерших групп и только одну кладу с современными представителями - Crocodylomorpha Walker, 1970. Родственные связи псевдозухий активно обсуждаются в литературе, а ближайшие внешние группы по отношению к Crocodylomorpha остаются спорными. В Pseudosuchia обычно выделяется несколько предположительно монофилетичных клад (Рис. 1.1): бронированные Aetosauria Marsh, 1884, мелкоразмерные плотоядные Erpetosuchidae Watson, 1917 и Gracilisuchidae Butler, Sullivan, Ezcurra, Liu, Lecuona et Sookias, 2014, среднеразмерные хищные Ornithosuchidae von Huene, 1908 и Poposauroidea Nopsca, 1923, и Crocodylomorpha (Brusatte et al., 2010; Nesbitt, 2011; Butler et al., 2014; Nesbitt et al., 2017; Sues, 2019). Большинство этих таксонов жили в среднем или позднем триасе и вымерли во время триасово-юрского массового вымирания (Nesbitt, 2011; Sues, 2019).
Монофилия крупноразмерных плотоядных «Rauisuchia» подвергается сомнению или не поддерживается в большинстве недавних исследований (Gower, 2000; Nesbitt, 2011; Nesbitt et al., 2017; Sues, 2019); большинство из них основано на таксон-признаковой матрице С. Несбитта (Nesbitt, 2011). Эти исследования выявляют монофилетический таксон Paracrocodylomorpha Parrish, 1993 - кладу, состоящую из Poposauroidea, различных «рауизухий» и крокодиломорф (Рис. 1.1). Крупные плотоядные Rauisuchidae von Huene, 1942 выявляются в качестве ближайшего сестринского таксона к Crocodylomorpha. Этот результат последовательно выявляется с использованием набора данных С. Несбитта (Nesbitt, 2011) и его модификаций, но остается определенное несоответствие. «Rauisuchia» - это преимущественно суперхищники среднего и крупного размера: например, Decuriasuchus (средний триас, Бразилия) достигал длины 2-3 м, Prestosuchus (верхний триас, Бразилия) - примерно 5-6 м, а рауизухиды Rauisuchus (верхний триас, Бразилия) и Postosuchus (верхний триас, США) достигали длины 3-4 и 6 м соответственно
(Weinbaum, 2011; Lautenschlager, Rauhut, 2014; Sues, 2019). Вероятно, это были эволюционно продвинутые таксоны и высшие хищники в соответствующих экосистемах. Близкие родственные связи в основном мелких базальных крокодиломорф (но см. Zanno et al., 2015) с этими преимущественно крупными таксонами кажутся мне неубедительными.
Альтернативная гипотеза - этозавры (Aetosauria) как ближайшая внешняя группа по отношению к крокодиломорфам - отстаивалась Д.Дж. Гауэром (Gower, 2002; Gower, Walker, 2002). Она основана на анализе признаков мозговой коробки. Кроме того, С. Брусатте с коллегами обнаружил кладу, включающую Aetosauria, Gracilisuchus, Erpetosuchus и Crocodylomorpha (Brusatte et al., 2010). Правильный выбор внешней группы имеет решающее значение при изучении филогенетических отношений внутри Crocodylomorpha (Wilberg, 2015), поэтому этот вопрос следует решить в ходе дальнейших анализов.
Остеология мозговой коробки и эндокраниальная анатомия неравномерно изучены среди псевдозухий. Существуют подробные описания для нескольких этозавров (Desmatosuchus: Hopson, 1979; Small, 2002; von Baczko et al., 2021; Neoaetosauroides: von Baczko et al., 2018; Stagonolepis: Gower, Walker, 2002), эрпетозухида Parringtonia из среднего триаса Мадагаскара (Nesbitt et al., 2017), предполагаемого близкого родственника этозавров - Revueltosaurus из верхнего триаса США (Parker et al., 2011), орнитозухида Riojasuchus из верхнего триаса Аргентины (von Baczko, Desojo , 2016), попозавроида Arizonasaurus из среднего триаса США (Gower, Nesbitt, 2006) и несколько других «рауизухий» (Batrachotomus: Gower, 2002; Postosuchus: Weinbaum, 2011; Prestosuchus: Mastrantonio et al., 2013, 2019; Saurosuchus: Alcober, 2000).
1.2 Crocodylomorpha и базальные представители группы
Крокодилы и все таксоны, более близкие к ним, чем к другим кладам псевдозухий, объединяются в Crocodylomorpha (Benton, Clark, 1988; Nesbitt, 2011) (Рис. 1.2). Современное понимание этого таксона было установлено в работах А. Уолкера и Дж. Кларка (Walker, 1970, 1972, 1990; Clark, 1986, 1994; Benton, Clark, 1988). Х. Бонапарт предложил включать наиболее базальных крокодиломорф в группу 'Sphenosuchia' (Bonaparte, 1982). Монофилетическая группа ' Sphenosuchia' была обнаружена в некоторых ранних анализах (Sereno, Wild, 1992; Clark et al., 2000); однако эта концепция не подтверждается в большинстве недавних исследований. Базальные крокодиломорфы обычно выявляются как парафилетическая града в основании Crocodylomorpha, при этом некоторые таксоны более родственны с эволюционно продвинутой кладой Crocodyliformes (Benton, Clark, 1988; Clark et al., 2004; Nesbitt, 2011; Pol et al., 2013; Leardi et al., 2017, 2020) (Рис. 1.2А). базальными крокодиломорфами все таксоны, относящиеся к Crocodylomorpha, но не входящие в Crocodyliformes.
Базальные крокодиломорфы в основном были маленькими и проворными наземными животными с удлиненными конечностями; длина тела большинства из них достигала 1-1,5 м (Sues, 2019). Однако некоторые представители, такие как Carnufex и Redondavenator (оба из верхнего триаса, США), были намного крупнее (около 3 м в длину) и, вероятно, были высшими хищниками в своих экосистемах до появления динозавров (Nesbitt et al., 2005; Zanno et al., 2015). Базальные крокодиломорфы известны в ископаемой летописи с позднего триаса до поздней юры (Pol et al., 2013; Leardi et al., 2017, 2020; Sues, 2019).
